homemade playdough

I thought it was about time that I actually did a craft or something with the boys, so today we made HotWheels Jello Jigglers (quite disgusting as it is two pkgs of jello to only one cup of boiling water - very sugary and full of 'goodness' for little boys!) We then made playdough. I had picked up five different KoolAid pkgs, hoping to make five different bright fun playdough colours but... I didn't have enough 'cream of tartar', so had to use a different recipe (the KoolAid one near the bottom) and mix two colours together. I am now officially out of salt in my house too - had to pound out a salt shaker even, to get the last couple granules! This first recipe is my fave - the texture and consistency is nicer, it's less messy and doesn't dry out as fast. The second one is not made over the stove and calls for 2 cups of boiling water. It then tells you to knead the dough... I highly recommend that you don't do this within 8 minutes of pouring as boiling water tends to be very hot! Hello?! I tried around the 5 minute mark and yep, it was still REALLY hot! I posted other recipes that were listed too - there's a couple you shouldn't try if you have a peanut allergy but they look fun, although making cookies might be just as easy :) ENJOY!

Kool Aid Playdough (my fave)
Ingredients:
· 1 C white flour
· 1 C water
· 1/4 C salt
· 3 TBSP oil
· 1 rounded TBSP cream of tartar
· 1 envelope of unsweetened kool aid, any kind, but it needs to have a color

Directions:
1. Combine all ingredients in a sauce pan.
2. Wisk together until smooth.
3. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it forms a ball and sticks to the spoon. (Don't use the wisk for this part).
4. When its ready, put it on wax paper and let it cool. It should not be sticky at all.
5. When its cool, knead it a few times and play!
6. You'll notice that the kool aid makes it smell wonderful and adds the color.
7. We like grape, orange, and lime the best!
8. You can color this with food coloring if you want, but it just won't smell as good.
9. Store this in a zip lock baggie or air tight container in the refrigerator between uses. It will keep a couple of weeks.

Our mixes... the outside dough recipe yields more but is way too dry

Home Made Playdough
2 cups flour
1 cup salt
2 tablespoons cream of tarter
2 cups of water
1 tablespoons mineral oil food coloring
Directions: Mix all ingredients in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring until stiff. Allow to cool, then knead.

Home Made Playdough (2)
1 cup flour
1 cup of water
1/2 cup of salt
2 tablespoons cream of tarter
1 tablespoon of oil
Directions: Cook this ingredients until it forms an item in the pan. Pour it out onto a tupperware lid. Cover with damp cloth. Add food coloring if you like. Store new playdough in the fridge in an air tight container. It is non-eatable playdough.

Peanut Butter Playdough
3 1/2 cups creamy peanut butter
4 cups powdered sugar
4 cups powdered milk
3 1/2 cups corn syrup
Directions: Mix ingredients by hand. Can decorate with sprinkles, M&Ms etc. It is eatable.

Salt Playdough
1 cup water
1 cup salt
1/2 cup flour
Food coloring
Directions: Mix ingredients in pan. Add food coloring. Stir on low heat. When it thickens remove from heat. Put some on waxed paper or floured surface and roll out. Cut out objects. Air dry objects few days. Store un-usedportion in air-tight container. It is non-eatable

Oatmeal Playdough
2 cups smooth peanut butter
2 cups rolled oats
2 cups powdered milk
2/3 cups honey
Optional -Rice Krispes, Coconut Sprinkles, chocolate chips, Red Hots, etc.
Directions: Mix ingredients until combined. Wash hands. Lay down wax paper. Store in air-tight container.

KoolAid Playdough - the other one I tried but don't really care for
3 cups flour
1/2 cups salt
2 KoolAid packages
2 cups boiling water
Directions: Mix dry ingredients together. Add boiling water. Knead on floured board. Can add flour by sprinkles until desired consistency. This playdough will last for a long time when stored correctly. *Note: they obviously missed the 'allow to cool and then knead' part...

Numnum Playdough
2 cups of honey
3 cups of peanut butter
3 packets powdered milk
Directions: Stir all ingredients together until smooth. Add more powdered milk if desired. Is sticky and eatable.

Cloud Playdough
1 cup water
1 1/2 cup vegetable oil
6 cup flour
Add a few drops of food coloring to water
Directions: Combine water, oil and flour in a large bowl. Knead well. Add more water if necessary in small amounts until the dough is soft and stretchy. Cloud playdough should be used on a washable surface as it is very greasy

Coffee Playdough
4 cups unsifted all purpose flour
1 cup salt
1/4 cup instant coffee
1 1/2 c warm water
Directions: Dissolve the coffee in the warm water. In another bowl, mix the flour and the salt. Make a well and add 1 cup of the coffee water into it. Mix with a fork or with your hands until smoother. Add more coffee water as needed: dough should be smooth not sticky or crumbling. Store in air tight container. When you're done making figures, bake in oven for 1 hour at 300 degrees or until hard. A coat or 2 of shellac keeps it well preserved for longer lasting gifts.

Fruit Playdough
2 cups flour
1 cup salt
4 tablespoons cream of tarter
2 cups boiling water
2 tablespoons of cooking oil
3 oz package sugar-free fruit flavored gelatin
Directions: Mix dry ingredients in pan. Add the water and oil. Stir over medium heat until mixture forms a ball. Pour onto a sheet of wax paper.
